e-mail thetravelbug | I am not sure if this is the right place to post this but I am in a difficult situation and need some friendly help and advice. I am en-route to spend the next 6 months in France, near St Gaudens with my 3 dogs. I am driving through Italy from Bulgaria, but today the car broke down. There is some problem with the radiator/water, warning light keeps coming on every few hundred kilometers, I stop, let it cool down, fill up radiator water and off we go....all is fine for a little while...anyway this evening no warning light came on, the car just suddenly overheated. I managed to pull off at Aulle, just north of La Spezia on the med and found a garage. They had a quick look and said that my engine is basically no good and that would take them 3 days to a week to have a look and then would be very expensive. All they could suggest was limping along slowly, stopping as soon as heat guage goes up and re-filling water but this is a little dangerous.
The car is a jeep cherokee loaded with 2 dog cages and 3 dogs and suitcases.
I am not sure what I am asking anyone for....general advice if you know anything about cars, a miracle in that someone has a tow truck and would come and meet me......someone that has a good second hand large 4x4 for sale at good price.......just very stuck, very frustrated and very worried, especially with dogs involved.....if I covered petrol and time could anyone pick me and dogs up and maybe I'll just scrap car here??? Ideal would be some tow truck to at least get me to France.
Anyone......
Rachel | thetravelbug replied on 30/10/2009 at 11:42 e-mail thetravelbug | Thanks for all emails of support, much appreciated. Had a second garage look at car and basically they said the same, engine completely knackered. Can be fixed but will cost around 2500E plus take 4 days or so, depending on part needed and where it has to come from. Trying to just scrap the car and buy a new one seemed to have its own difficulties, can't buy a car in Italy as a non-Italian and would take couple of days minimum anyway, can't just leave car for garage to scrap, municipality has to approve it, costs a few hundred Euros, might cause problems with paperwork back in Bulgaria for car.....looked to hire but nothing locally as far as I could find out, maybe something from La Spezia but need something big for dogs and all luggage and then still what to do with car here - leave and come back for it in a week? scrap?........
So did not appear to have much choice but to max credit card and tell them to fix it as quick as they can (even though costing more than car worth), stay in hotel over road that were happy for dogs to come in with me....going to be a long 4 days.....dogs stressed enough as it is with long journey. Still at least hotel room has terrace so they are outside in their cages and can watch the world, or mainly traffic below, go by. |

I know it sounds rather strange, but cracking a couple of eggs into your radiator does the job of sealing small leaks in an emergency, and could get you to your destination. It's an old trick and it doesn't do your pipework any favours, but it does work temporarily.
Good luck!.. Peter |

May have got me to campsite I was heading for which would have been preferable to here but nevermind. No idea if I have blown a gasket as would hardly understand if explained in English, let alone Italian. But guess what's done is done and trying to make best of it. Went on the tourist trail today to Cinque Terra villages. |

Does anyone know a good B&B close to motorway and easy to find (in dark) that I could stay at for the night and that will allow a dog in (other 2 can stay in cages in car as will have been out all morning). |
