My wife and I, now retired live in France for several months every year. Is there now any limitation to the length of time we can keep our UK registered and insured vehicle in the country.

My insurance company told me a maximum of 3 months.

Thanks Louis, but our insurance company (Saga) says 6 months. My query is about what the French government or the E C allows. It used to be said that if a car was kept in the country for more than three months it was considered to have been imported, but un-elected officials often change the rules and aren't we supposed to have free movement of goods and services?? Just suppose I drove down and after three months popped back to UK by air, or went to Spain by train. What then?? Would the insurance be valid? Suppose the car was stolen from an airport car park!!

It is quite simple
1. The legal EU rules -you are allowed 6 months (in 12) in asnother country. For longer periods the car must be re-registered in the new country. During this time it must be legally allowed on the roads in its country of registration (i.e. MOT, road tax)
2. The insurance position -different insurance companies have different conditions that they apply to their policies -so one may be 30 days another 3 months etc.

Would that make any difference depending where you are registered as living ... say you live in england but have a holiday home in france .... would you still then have to register your car in france if you wanted to holiday for more than 6 months ?
