Radio

You can receive the BBC World Service on short wave, while the main BBC stations and other English-language radio can be received via many satellite TV installations. Click here for West and South West Europe's frequency chart, or here for the listing of frequencies - note that all times given are GMT, so you must add an hour during winter and two hours during summer for local time (CET).

Voice of America is also available on short wave, with NewsNow. Its frequency chart for the region is here, and its programme guide is here.

Radio on the Internet

Many international radio stations are available streamed live on the Internet. You typically need RealPlayer (Real Player Basic, the free version, is rather hidden away on the real.com website, but it does exist) although sometimes a feed is available in Windows Media format, compatible with the players that have shipped with recent versions of Windows and Microsoft Internet Explorer.

Radio in Languedoc-Roussillon

• Radio Pays d'Herault (RPH), 102.9 / 89 / 96.7 FM: local community radio (non-profit) broadcasting to Lodève, North Clermont, Hérault, Montagnac, Pezenas and south to Agde with a signal which reaches West Montpellier and East Bézier
• 1FM: Changing schedule of music and chat for holiday makers in Agde
• Radio Marseillette (91.8 or 101.3 FM) has a live, weekly show in English, Xpat Blues, with American DJ Barrie Dee Thursdays at 17:00 

Television

Although both Canal+ and Arte show some English-language programmes (particularly feature films, often at odd times of the day or night), for a reasonable amount of English-language television you really need a satellite TV installation.

Canal Satellite and TPS are the two main (digital) satellite providers in France. Both have many channels, with a reasonable number of English-language programmes available on the French-language channels - including feature films, comedy, TV dramas, and documentaries - together with some English news feeds (from sources such as CNN, BBC World, Sky News and CNBC).

Alternatively, it is possible to access UK-based free-to-air (FTA) programming on the same satellite that broadcasts Sky Digital. Please note, however, that there is no legal way to access encrypted programming on that satellite while in France (such as Sky Digital's premium channels accessible only through a Sky subscription package, or those channels that may only be watched in the UK using a satellite receiver with a free-to-view - FTV - card installed).

• Languedoc Sun: Monthly print magazine for the Hérault and Gard, with articles on lifestyle and living. Distributed through shops and tourist offices
• PO Life: Free 15-page magazine about life in the Pyrénées-Orientales, available from tourist offices
• Blablablah: Bilingual English/French print magazine for people living in the Hérault and Pezenas (34). Published monthly, it is an event listings magazine with features on wine, nature and art. Available from shops, cafes and tourist offices
• The Connexion: Monthly newspaper for English-speaking residents of France with French news in English. Available from newsagents or by subscription
• International Herald Tribune: edited in Paris, is the only English-language daily newspaper available on its day of publication

Many international newspapers are available at many newsstands, usually on the day following publication.
